Associate Curator of Islamic Art—Exhibitions

(Full-time, permanent, non-union position)

The Brooklyn Museum seeks to appoint an Islamic art specialist to the endowed position of Hagop Kevorkian Associate Curator of Islamic Art. This is a permanent 21-hour per week position, allowing the incumbent ample time for teaching or other outside activities. The Associate Curator will be responsible for developing a new installation of the Arts of the Islamic World collection and for the public interpretation and care of the Museum's exceptional collection of Islamic art.

Requirements: The successful candidate must have, at minimum, an advanced degree in the history of Islamic art (Ph.D. preferred) and two years of museum experience or its equivalent in the area of Islamic art and culture. S/he will have demonstrated a deep commitment to engaging a wide public audience in innovative and exciting ways, as well as to research and scholarship in the field. Excellent verbal and written communication and research skills are required, with a strong writing/publication record. Good interpersonal skills are essential, and a reading knowledge of Arabic and/or Persian is requisite.

Responsibilities: The Associate Curator of Islamic Art will be responsible for overseeing the Arts of the Islamic World collection, including researching, developing, and installing the collection, and will be a leader in the field, in the community, and at the Brooklyn Museum in broadening public knowledge of and interest in Islamic art and culture. This position will work closely with colleagues in the Museum's other curatorial areas to develop projects and installations with cross-collection significance.

Reports to: Managing Curator of Ancient Egyptian, African, and Asian Art

Work Schedule: Full time, 35 hours per week.
