Ladan Akbarnia

A specialist in the art of Iran and Central Asia, Ladan Akbarnia joined the Brooklyn Museum in 2007. She organized a complete reinstallation of the Islamic Galleries in 2009. She was also responsible for the exhibition Light of the Sufis: The Mystical Arts of Islam, which traveled to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 2010, and was the principal author of its accompanying catalogue. With an interest in contemporary Islamic art, she has contributed to contemporary projects at the Brooklyn Museum, such as Ghada Amer: Love Has No End (2008), as well as acquiring the work of emerging artists such as Pouran Jinchi and Sadegh Tirafkan. Dr. Akbarnia received her B.A. from Vassar College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, where she co-curated the exhibition The Tablet and the Pen: Drawings from the Islamic World (2006). She is on leave from the Brooklyn Museum from September 2009 until September 2011, serving as Executive Director of the Iran Heritage Foundation (2009–10) and on a special assignment at the British Museum (2010–11).
