Lisa and Bernard Selz Curator of Asian Art
A scholar of the art of India, Joan Cummins joined the Brooklyn Museum in 2007. From 1998 until 2005, Dr. Cummins was Assistant Curator of the Department of the Arts of Asia, Oceania, and Africa at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and until 2006, served as a consultant to the MFA. She received a B.A. from Brown University and M. Phil and M.A. degrees from Columbia University where she was also awarded a Ph.D. Early in her career she was a research assistant at the Brooklyn Museum in the Department of Asian Art. She has lectured and published widely and is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards. She is the author of Indian Painting: From Cave Temples to the Colonial Period, recently published by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Dr. Cummins was coordinating curator of Utagawa: Masters of the Japanese Print, 1770–1900, presented at Brooklyn in the spring of 2008.
