Film and Discussion: Before Night Falls

Saturday, March 14, 2009

2–4 pm

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

Similar to the lush, visual landscapes in Hernan Bas's paintings, Before Night Falls (Julian Schnabel, 2000, R, 125 min.) is a poetic and visually stunning film by painter-turned-film-director Julian Schnabel. Actor Javier Bardem portrays the extraordinary life of Cuban novelist and poet Reinaldo Arenas in an Academy Award–nominated performance. Arenas, the author of over 20 passionate novels, grew up in Cuba, where he was arrested and persecuted for being gay, and left for Miami on the Mariel boat lift in 1980. He later moved to New York where he died in 1990.
