Film Screening and Director’s Talk: Year of the Woman

Sunday, October 28, 2012

2–2 pm

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

InYear of the Woman (Sandra Hochman, 1973, 87 min.), an experimental documentary about the women’s liberation movement in the early 1970s, poet Sandra Hochman brings film directors Claudia Weill (Girlfriends), Martha Coolidge (Rambling Rose), and Barbara Kopple (Wild Man Blues), then recent college grads, to the Democratic National Convention in Florida, site of the first meeting of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Utilizing animation, poetry, humor, and theatrics, Hochman and her crew challenge and provoke the convention’s male attendees.

Featuring notable appearances by Flo Jackson, Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug, Warren Beatty, and Norman Mailer, the film is a fascinating and important part of documentary and feminist film history that has only rarely been screened. The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Joan’s Digest, and the n+1 Feminist Research Team are proud to present this film in its first New York screening since its 1973 premiere. Hochman will be present for a discussion following the film. This event is free with Museum admission.
