Deadline for Call for Papers for Feminism Now Symposium

10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, 4th Floor

This symposium will showcase graduate and post-graduate students of art history and related disciplines as they present new scholarship that reflects feminist approaches. The deadline for the call for papers is December 5, 2008. The symposium takes place on March 28, 2009.

Annual Members Holiday Sale and Open House

10:00 AM – 9:00 PM Rubin Lobby, 1st Floor

All current Members are invited to celebrate the season at the Brooklyn Museum during the annual Holiday Sale and Open House. Members will enjoy twenty percent savings on Museum Shop purchases (twice the standard Member discount), in addition to free gift wrapping. A Trunk Show of Baltic amber jewelry will take place from 12 to 7 p.m., and book signings will begin at 5 p.m. Nan Richardson and Claudia Pearson, author and illustrator respectively, will sign copies of their children's book Tribal Alphabet, while Richard Haw will sign copies of Art of the Brooklyn Bridge: A Visual History. Only The Black List Project: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and Elvis Mitchell will be on view. An evening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. will include seasonal refreshments.

Creative Art-Making—Fabric Printing

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Meet in the Rubin Lobby, 1st Floor

Learn simple fabric printing techniques using stencils with Brooklyn-based, Scandinavian textile designer Lotta Jansdotter. Free with Museum admission, but registration is required via e-mail: creative.art.making@brooklynmuseum.org.

Panel Discussion: "Sex Trafficking and the New Abolitionists"

Acclaimed activist Gloria Steinem leads a panel discussing the fight against human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and violence against women and girls. Joining her will be Taina Bien-Aime, Executive Director of Equality Now; Dorchen Leidholdt, Director of the Center for Battered Women’s Legal Services at Sanctuary for Families; and Rachel Lloyd, Executive Director of GEMS.
