The great age of French cartography began with the work of Nicolas Sanson, the patriarch of the famous French mapmaking families who dominated French map publishing during the second half of the seventeenth century. After Sanson's death his two sons and grandson, in partnership with A. H. Jaillot, carried on the family business. Jaillot re-engraved Sanson's maps for this folio publication. This rare atlas was accessioned in 1915 and probably was in the collection of the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library, which became the nucleus of the Brooklyn Museum Libraries collection.
