Picks of the Week!

Melissa Messina @ 2:52 pm
  • We would like to congratulate Mequitta Ahuja on her current exhibition Encounters with Objects of Another Foreign Origin (April 27th - May 26th) at BravinLee in NYC. Mequitta’s painting in the Global Feminisms exhibition was recently featured in the February 2007 article “We’re Finally Infiltrating” in ARTnews. We wish her much success with her exhibition!
  • We would also like to congratulate another artist in Global Feminisms, Beatrice Cussol, on her amazing exhibition, her first solo show in the U.S., at Envoy Gallery which opened last week (at their Chrystie Street location in NYC) and runs through May 26th. Check it out!
  • And yet another Global Feminisms artist we’d like to congratulate is Tejal Shah. Her show at Thomas Erben Gallery in Chelsea just closed last week to great acclaim. Kudos to you Tejal! For more info on Tejal you can visit the gallery’s website.
  • Though feminist art pioneer Carolee Schneemann’s exhibition Breaking Borders (March 24 - April 22) at Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto is over, its companion exhibition Remains To Be Seen (March 31st - May 26) at CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, NY, is still up. The weather is warm and will prove to be worth the trip!
  • Check out the new website for HERESIES Film Project, which includes an online archive of every issue of HERESIES; A Feminist Journal on Art and Politics, published 1977-1992. For the first time since they were published, all 27 issues are again available. They are all downloadable from the site in the Adobe PDF format. The website also includes a full proposal for the project - which can be printed - as well as biographies of most of the women who founded the magazine, stills from the 70’s and behind-the-scenes photos of the on-location shoots in Santa Fe, New York, Venice, Italy and Carboneras, Spain. Watch for the trailer of the feature documentary, The Heretics, showing on the website soon!
  • On Sunday April 22 (Okay, we are a little late on this pick but could not resist sneaking it in) The Washington Post dedicated the Sunday Museums & Galleries section to Feminism and Art. What a spread! It included articles on The Dinner Party, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Yoko Ono, and the Guerrilla Girls’ latest project Horror on the National Mall!, among others.
  • The highly anticipated documentary film on Alice Neel was released this month and is screening in various locations including daily screenings at the Cinema Village on E. 12th St. See this site for more information including a trailer, info on the artist, background on the film (made by her grandson Andrew), and other U.S. screenings in May.
  • Artist and curator, Brynna Tucker, A.I.R. Fellow, is calling for definitions of feminism as part of her residency project with the gallery. We urge you to participate in this fascinating work of art by clicking here.
  • Finally, here is an interesting article Feminist Art: A Reassessment by Susan Bee and Mira Schor published on M/E/A/N/I/N/G on-line journal. It includes a myriad of responses from artists and writers such as Ingrid Calame, Mary Beth Edelson and Nancy Princenthal, to name a few, and has some amazing images too!

Alert!

Melissa Messina @ 10:59 am

If you did not hear about the Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold the nation’s first abortion procedure ban, please read this article on the N.O.W. website to learn more. This decision has dangerous implications for Roe v. Wade and is an assault on women’s rights. Other good sources of information on the issue came from CNN and, as always, PBS.

Feminisms Without Borders Symposium

Maura Reilly @ 12:16 pm

Thanks to everyone for making the Feminisms Without Borders Symposium such a great success! The speakers presented fantastic lectures that incited much dialogue and debate about the importance of global feminisms. My co-curator Linda Nochlin and I cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm, expertise, and participation in what we consider one of many exciting Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art Programs!

Check out what this visitor had to say about the symposium.
