Just watched the artist talk video. It gave me a much better sense of this work's background and context. (To be honest, around my house we used to just refer to this photograph as "My Vagina is a Pocket.") As someone who doesn't have much experience with the art world, Schneeman's talk was also a nice reminder that the pieces we see aren't always firm statements; they may be explorations, attempts to understand and struggle with ideas an artist feels are her own even though they've come from a place partly outside herself and her own conscious, deliberate thought process. It's so easy for me to recognize this approach in literature, yet I have a hard time remembering it when I'm looking at art.
Finally, though, I have to ask: did she say she used a secret family recipe to help the scroll unfurl smoothly? Is that really true? I can only, or perhaps can't even, imagine growing up in a family with a recipe like that. They are much cooler than my family. There's really no comparison.
