Alpis de Cudot
b. circa 1150, Cudot, France; d. 1211, France

Born into a peasant family, the shepherd Alpis (Alpaïs) de Cudot was stricken with leprosy at a young age. Her illness, and the fact that she starved herself, apparently induced visions. One such vision convinced her that the world was round. Her assertions about the universe and its properties were scorned. She was canonized in the late nineteenth century.
