Angela Merici
b. circa 1474, Desenzano, Italy; d. 1540, Brescia, Italy

Angela Merici founded the Ursuline Sisters, the first religious association of women to work outside the cloister and the first Catholic order dedicated to the education of women. Her desire to work in society, to provide education to girls, regardless of status, was radical for its time. The Ursuline order, named after Saint Ursula, was formalized in 1535 in Brescia. Angela was canonized in 1807 by Pope Pius VII.
