Wife of Holy Roman emperor Louis II (ruled 850–875), Engelberga was the de facto co-ruler of her husband's domain from the time of their marriage in 851. As his trusted partner, she often served as an envoy in important negotiations. In 896, she became abbess of the convent of San Sisto at Piacenza, Italy, which she had founded.
