Artemisia II
Date of birth unknown; d. 350 B.C., Caria (modern-day Turkey)
The sister and wife of the famous King Mausolus, Artemisia II became sole ruler of Caria after his death. As a tribute to her late husband, she commissioned the splendid Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Artemisia was also known as a botanist and medical researcher.
