Beruriah
Flourished 2nd century A.D., Palestine and Asia Minor
Beruriah (Bruriah) is the only woman mentioned in the Talmud, the book of Jewish rabbinical law, as a sage. The wife of Rabbi Meir, she was said to have challenged him often on the laws, most importantly teaching him to pray for the redemption of sinners rather than their destruction. The Talmud recounts several instances in which her interpretations of Jewish law were accepted over her male contemporaries.
