Carlota Matienzo
b. 1881, Barcelona; d. 1926, Puerto Rico
Carlota Matienzo (née Cintrón) earned a teaching degree at the University of Puerto Rico, then pursued doctoral studies in philosophy at Columbia University in New York. After returning to Puerto Rico, she became a teacher and dedicated her life to reform of the public school system, for which she received international acclaim. A feminist, she directed the Liga Social Sufragista in the early 1920s. She was posthumously honored with a hall in her name at the University of Puerto Rico, where the annual Carlota Matienzo Prize is awarded to graduates who demonstrate outstanding ability in teaching.
