Celia Fiennes

b. 1662, Wiltshire, England; d. 1741, London

Diarist and travel writer Celia Fiennes made her first extended journey in 1697, trekking more than 600 miles on horseback through northern England in just six weeks. From 1685 to 1712, Fiennes explored every county in England, recording observations about everything she encountered, from castles to the countryside, food and drink, and even the specific roads she traveled. Her writings were collected and published as The Journeys of Celia Fiennes in 1947.
