Circe
Mythic, worshipped in ancient Greece, dates vary, beginning circa 1600 B.C.

The Greek goddess Circe, sometimes interpreted as a sorceress, had the power to turn her enemies into animals. When Odysseus landed on her island, she transformed all of his men into pigs, but he had been forewarned about her powers and had protected himself with a magic herb. When she saw that Odysseus could not be defeated, Circe restored his crew and he remained with her for a year.
