Dorcas, called Tabitha in Aramaic, an ancient Semitic language, was a Christian woman from Joppa (Jaffa), a city in Israel, who spent much of her time making clothes for the poor. Her story appears in Acts of the Apostles, the fifth book of the New Testament, which states that when she died, the townspeople called for Saint Peter, who raised her from the dead.
