Edith of Wessex married Edward the Confessor, king of England, in 1045. A contemporary art historian, Carola Hicks, has proposed Queen Edith as the artist who created the Bayeux Tapestry, a large embroidered cloth that commemorates the Battle of Hastings, which was fought on October 14, 1066, between the Normans and the Anglo-Saxon army of England. The Norman victory was a step in the eventual conquest of England.
