Edith Sitwell

b. 1887, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England; d. 1964, London

Edith Sitwell was an English poet, critic, and biographer. While in her poetry, Sitwell often focused on the sonic quality of words, she also explored personal feminist beliefs, especially evident in her early work, collected in 1930 into Collected Poems. Other notable collections include Façade (1923), Gold Coast Customs (1949), and The Canticle of the Rose (1965). In 1954, Sitwell was honored with the title Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
