Gertrude of Nivelles

b. 626, Landen, Belgium; d. 659, Nivelles, Belgium

Gertrude was the sister of the nun Begga. She refused to marry and, in 639, her mother Itta erected a monastery at Nivelles, Belgium, and appointed Gertrude abbess. She spent her life running the monastery and studying scripture. She was worshipped as a saint almost immediately following her death.
