Jeanne Louis Farrenc

Jeanne-Louise Farrenc was a Parisian pianist, composer, teacher, and scholar. She composed numerous pieces for piano, including Air russe varié, two orchestral overtures (1834), three symphonies (1840s), and many chamber works; the latter are prized as her strongest pieces. In 1842, Farrenc was appointed professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire, and held this position until her retirement in 1873. Regarded as an excellent teacher, she was the only female musician in the nineteenth century to hold a permanent post of such rank and importance at the Conservatoire.
