Madeleine de Sable
b. 1599, Touraine, France; d. 1678, Paris

Madame de Sablé was a woman of letters who hosted a prominent salon with members that included Marie de Lafayette, Philippe I, duc d'Orléans, and La Rochefoucauld. She developed the idea of establishing her own salon after attending a soirée given by Madame de Rambouillet. The philosophical discussions Sablé led focused on issues of human nature and the human condition, subjects she explored in her own writings, authoring more than eighty-one maxims that were published in 1678.
