French harpsichordist Marguerite-Antoinette Couperin was the first woman to hold the position ordinaire de la musique de la chambre du roi pour le clavecin (court musician to the king of France), a post she assumed in 1730 after her father, François Couperin, retired. In addition to her duties at the royal court, Couperin was harpsichord mistress to the king's daughters.
