Martha Baretskaya
Flourished circa 1471–78, Novgorod, Russia
Marfa Boretskaya, a wealthy landowner, was the mayor of the Russian city of Novgorod. Sometimes simply called the Mayoress (Posadnitsa), Marfa organized the people of Novgorod against Ivan III, who as the prince of Russia was trying to annex the city to Moscow. When Novgorod fell to the Muscovites in 1478, Marfa was arrested, her property confiscated, and she was sent into exile.
