Nammu
Mythic, worshipped in Sumer (modern-day Iraq), circa 3500–2500 B.C.

Nammu, the Sumerian creation goddess, arose from the sea and gave birth to heaven, earth, and the first gods. She represented the freshwater ocean, called the Apsu, which Sumerians believed existed below the earth as a source of life and fertility. Nammu also created the first humans with her son, Enki, the god of culture who presided over the Apsu.
