Mythic, known in ancient Greece, beginning circa 1200 B.C.
The correct spelling of this name is ORITHYA.
Daughter of Marpesia, Orithya led the Amazons, a mythic race of warrior women, into battle against the Athenians. The conflict was precipitated by an earlier invasion of the Amazons' territory by the Greek hero Herakles, who had stolen the magic girdle of Queen Hippolyte. One of Orithya's greatest military strategies was using an alliance with Scythia, on the Pontic-Caspian steppe, to recruit Scythian slaves in Athens to the Amazonian cause.
