Telesilla
Flourished circa 510 B.C., Argos, ancient Greece

Telesilla wrote lyric poetry and composed hymns for female choruses in honor of Artemis and Apollo. She was also a warrior-heroine. According to the Greek writer Pausanias, when the king of Sparta attacked Argos and killed all able-bodied men, Telesilla dressed as a man and led a group of women into battle, successfully repelling the attack.
