Birth Piece
Nancy Azara. Birth Piece, 1967.
Description:
Before my daughter was born, a sculptor friend gave me a large log from a maple tree that had been felled by a hurricane. It was massive, three feet wide at the trunk, and it sat in my studio. I almost felt that it was waiting for me to describe Nana's birth. In 1967, after her birth I made the maple log into a carving, "Birth Piece," freezing the moment in time when she entered the world. This sculpture uses the rich grain of the maple to simulate the energy of her birth, and the crotch of the wood for the moment of her entrance, the crowning.
