#CLOSErikers, Build Communities
Participants Darren Mack, Marie Fuchs, Herbert Murray, Marilyn Reyes-Scales, Sarita Daftary-Steel

For decades, the Rikers Island Jail Complex has been marked by violence and corruption, and has been impervious to substantive reform. In June 2017, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled his plan to close the complex, with a timeline of at least ten years. Join activists Darren Mack, Herbert Murray, and Marie Fuchs from JustLeadershipUSA, and Marilyn Reyes-Scales from VOCAL-NY, founders of the #CLOSErikers campaign, as they discuss the urgent need to implement real solutions guided by directly impacted communities, reimagine New York City’s failed criminal justice system, and transform the city into a national leader in ending mass incarceration.
