Education: Teacher Resource Packets




Resource packets providing contextual information about works of art, classroom activities, and slides or reproductions are available for purchase by K–12 teachers who wish to introduce students to the Brooklyn Museum’s collections and integrate art into their curricula. Museum educators and curators develop these packets in conjunction with classroom teachers. Packets are three-ring bound, unless otherwise noted.

Picturing a Nation: Teaching with American Art and Material Culture ($35 packet with slides; $45 packet with overhead transparencies)
This U.S. history curriculum guide was written by high school teachers and museum educators. Divided into content areas, it includes timelines, bibliographies, and twelve images. The packet also contains units and lessons on Westward Expansion, Progress and American Identity, Women and Portraiture, Slavery in Brooklyn, and a Document-Based Questioning lesson titled “Perspectives on George Washington.”

Oceanic Art: Art from the Pacific Islands ($35)
This packet includes a history of Oceanic art, description and background information for twenty slides, stories related to the images, discussion questions, maps, and a bibliography.
African wood carving

The Arts of Africa ($35 packet with slides; $45 packet with overhead transparencies)
This packet includes background information on teaching themes such as Birth and Childhood, Initiation and Death, and Power and Leadership. There are ten slides, accompanied by questions for viewing and key concepts. There is a section on African stories, a set of maps, and a bibliography.
William Williams: Deborah Hall

American Paintings: A Slide Packet for Educators ($15)
Introducing teachers to sixteen key works in the Brooklyn Museum’s American paintings collection, this folder packet includes an introductory letter offering suggested uses for the images as well as background information on each work and its artist.
