Education: School Visit Information

School groups are welcome to explore the Museum through guided and self-guided visits. Guided Gallery Visits are led by Museum educators on a variety of topics and are available for grades K–2 and elementary, middle, and high school groups. Educators are encouraged to prepare students for their visit using the Museum's online and print resources.

Reservations
All groups must make advance reservations, which are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and fill up quickly. Please make reservations as early as possible, since processing may take up to three weeks. Scheduling begins September 6 for guided or self-guided visits from October to January; scheduling begins December 1 for visits from February to June .

Multiple Classes
When scheduling multiple classes, keep in mind that no more than two classes may receive the same lesson in the same time slot. If you are scheduling three or more classes, they will need to be scheduled in different time slots.

Cancellations and Rescheduling
If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call the Youth Tour Coordinator at (718) 501-6221 as soon as possible. If you do not notify the Museum, your school will be placed on a low-priority waiting list for future reservations. Although we will do our best to reschedule your appointment, we cannot guarantee that we can accommodate your request.

Group Size and Chaperones
One adult must be present for every ten students and must accompany the group at all times. The price of a visit for both guided and self-guided gallery groups includes up to thirty students and five adult chaperones.

School Bus Drop-Off and Parking
Buses may drop off school groups at the rear entrance to the Museum, accessible through the Museum’s parking lot entrance on Washington Avenue. Buses will not be charged for drop-off.

Depending on availability, buses may park in the parking lot located at the rear of the Museum. The charge is $15 per day. Fees are due in cash to the parking lot attendant and may not be included in the check payments for group visits.

Upon Arrival
The rear entrance opens into the Rubin Lobby, where your assigned Museum educator will meet your group. Museum educator-led groups will not be admitted to the Museum before 10 a.m.; self-guided groups will not be admitted before 11 a.m. Teachers must register at the Visitor Center on arrival.

Late Arrivals
Please be prompt. Classes arriving late may receive a condensed lesson due to scheduling limitations. Classes arriving more than a half-hour late may not be able to receive a guided gallery visit.

Lunch
There are no bag lunch facilities available in the Museum, and the Museum Café cannot accommodate school groups. There is a public plaza in front of the Museum, and two parks, Mount Prospect Park and Ronald McNair Park, a short walk from the Museum. If students bring bag lunches to be eaten outside the Museum, the lunches can be left at the Museum’s coat check.

Museum Shop
The Museum Shop offers books, postcards, art supplies, and toys for children. Only ten students are allowed in the Shop at a time, and teachers and chaperones must supervise students in the Shop and those waiting to enter. You're welcome to visit the Shop after your Museum educator has completed your program and you have retrieved your class’s belongings. Souvenirs for your class can also be pre-ordered. For more information visit the Shop online or call (718) 501-6340.

Museum Guidelines
We encourage you to share examples of good museum behavior with your class before your visit. The most important rule is not to touch the art or glass cases: the touch of a finger can damage art and leave dirt and oil behind. Discuss appropriate indoor voice and behavior with your class. Remember that our guards and security staff are here to make sure the artwork and visitors stay safe. Please be respectful if they ask you or your students to move back from the artwork. Food, drinks, and gum are not permitted in the galleries.

Self-Guided Groups
Self-guided groups are not permitted to visit a collection other than the one they have selected until 11:30 a.m. and are not allowed to visit the Luce Center for American Art. Please be mindful that you will be sharing the galleries with other school and adult groups as well as general visitors.

Photography
Photography is allowed in the Museum so long as the images are taken using existing light only (no flash) and are for personal, noncommercial use. Photography is often restricted in special exhibition galleries; if you are visiting a special exhibition, please ask at the Visitor Center to see if photography is allowed. We request that teachers and students refrain from taking photographs during guided visits.
