Edward Lycett (American, b. England, 1833–1910). Faience Manufacturing Company (1881–92). Covered Vase, 1886–90. Cream-colored earthenware painted over ivory-glazed ground with polychrome enamels and flat and raised gold paste decoration. Nally-Stufano Collection
A Persian incense burner illustrated in Albert Jacquemart’s 1873 history of ceramics is the likely inspiration for the form of this vase. By using venerated ceramic forms as models, Lycett elevated Faience Manufacturing Company’s wares and imbued them with historical associations.
