INTERVIEWER: "What about the influence of Afro-Caribbean art ... as discerned by the critics?" BASQUIAT: "I don't listen to what art critics say. I don't know anybody who needs a critic to find out what art is."

A griot expresses complex family or community histories through stories and music. Basquiat tries to express a complex sense of the world in a visual form. In what other ways is an artist like a griot?

Do you or someone you know have a story, an experience, a history, or a special view of the world that you would like to share? Please share your thoughts below.

I LOVE Basquiats Work... His enjoyment, disappointments, love and reflections on canvas and found objects. He has brought light to to those that are born to CREATE.
Basquiat came into the world to change how man sees art... art became the "Haves and the Have Nots".....Basquiat transformed that view.

Thank You "Warhol" for recognizing art for what it is.....a piece of a human shown through WHATEVER !!! Stuff with MEANING!
Things with Soul.... Visions without boundaries! Seeing Basquiat's Soul.

Thank You "Haring" for recognizing art for what it is...Color, shapes, structure with cartoonish views.... Visions without boundaries! Seeing Basquiat's Soul.

Because of ARTIST like the fore-mentioned We all have a chance to see Basquiats SOUL.

I have done over 400 Graphic pieces on the site here...some negative...alot of them Positive, but they all had that days SOUL.....Good or bad!
It was my way of saying THANK YOU to one of the GREATEST artist ever Shown "Jean Michel Basquiat".....King with a Crown!

Me encanta la expresividad y enorme fuerza de su obra, que a pesar de tener mucho de callejera, no me parece chabacana. Es fuerte. Me estremece.

Basquiat. What is not to say about such a magnificent artist. He has inspired so many people including myself, to discover themselves and touch boundaries outside their assessment. His god-given talent was short lived, yet his audience were and are, not even born yet. Like Picasso, he will conquer the art world one day soon, very soon.

basquiat has so much faith in his art. so much symbolism. It makes it impossible to ever know everything about his artwork, and exactly what he was thinking at the time. which makes it all the more magical. its astonishing that a person can have that much faith in a heritage that has been so troubled in the past, and that he can know so much about it. It makes me wish I had a faith like that.

I think that Basquiat is a wonderful artist. However, I think most seem to over analyze his work. When you create art do you think "O' and this here symbolizes..." I think not. Does anyone agree that his work is over analyzed?

I think that the norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard stole many of his ideas from of Basquiat.
