Artist Statement
A 1970 taxi driver’s guide lists 3 pages of NYC cafeterias including Dubrow’s cafeteria on Kings Highway. A sprawling, art deco style eating establishment on the corner of 16th Street you would enter through the revolving doors, take a ticket from the machine that announced your entry with a beep and scan the tables looking for familiar faces. You could plunk down a quarter for a cup of coffee and sit all day.

great shot.
That is a fantastic exposure; you absolutely nailed this one. The composition is absolutely compelling, and the exposure is dead-on; it's remarkable that the light was such that this happened, and even more remarkable that you happened to have your camera ready. Fantastic.
The effect is almost that of a collage. Wonderful.
The reflection and the composition is excellent this is really capturing a moment.
Outstanding capture.
just a great shot all around!
the checker cab says NYC, the application is note worthy, but the old woman would need to be juxtaposed to something newer than the cab.
Wow! So Atget!
Very Cool. Collage image. Reminds me of my grandma and the old days. Great in B&W.
Weegee-esque
effective vision of a crowded life in the city.
quintesential dreaming
this excellent photo of old brooklyn juxtaposed with some of the previous new brooklyn shots would work well with each other, but don't necessarily stand alone in fulfilling the theme... but great shot.
Jack Kerouac ate here
Crowded, but the surreal transparency prevents it from overpowering the photo.
This is gorgeous - love it!
Like the many layered imagery and the "history" fits the theme
If this is a reflection--where's the photographer? If it's doctored, is it still eligible? — Posted by Alex Kolben
It's a very beautiful picture. Human and poetic . Thank for this moment... — Posted by charlexandrie
Remarkable photo - what a gem!...I think I remember her. Bring back Dubrow's so we won't "fuhgeddaboudit" — Posted by anonymous
The woman in the photo is my great aunt who passed away in 1992! I'm blown away by this photo! She used to go to Dubrow's a few times a week. I wa reading the NY Times this morning and the photo is featured. I knew it was her immediately! — Posted by Joanne
This woman's name is Rose Wachtel and she is my great aunt. She "hung out" in Dubrow's and was a veteran of old Kings Highway — Posted by Ilene Wasserman
all photography is doctored, if you think about it; don't whine — Posted by don't worry be happy
Please note that this photograph is a single exposure. You can just make out my hand and the rim of my trusty old Pentax in the upper left corner. The checker cab was behind me and I was shooting through the sidewalk window. In the backround you see reflections in the mirrored walls of Dubrow's. — Posted by the photographer
a very nice picture it looks like the woman is relaxed — Posted by girlie
The layering is mesmerizing. I love the name of Dubrows reflected from across the street. — Posted by Tonyc
