I took this photograph as a memento of disappearing community structures. The Fire Station is a powerful symbol of protection, just knowing there are people close by willing to risk life and limb to help us when we need it is reassuring. The slow degradation of Engine No. 39 in Brooklyn in the name of progress is a melancholic sight. The bright colors of the mural have faded, soon to be replaced by another bright white condo. What will happen when the architecture of community is replaced by impersonal structures built in the spirit of profiting only the few?

RIGHT ON! this is a nice change of pace after all the assholes who seem to be condoning condo development in their photos. thank you!
WTF are you talking about? This isn't a 'disappearing community structure', it's a firehouse that is being improved and modified to serve the rapidly-expanding 4th Avenue community. No condo is being built here. Asshat.
It's an argument for polarizing filters. Could have been a nice image; white clipping detracts.
I am struck by the "notices" over/"over 100 years of service."
shows how things that are neededare being shut down.
technically not brilliant but speaks volumes about lost community locations
Dear WTF, ouch! But thanks, no really, you for set me straight. I'm so glad I got it wrong and that Engine No. 39 will not be shut down! It was an honest blunder, right next to the fire house is a big muddy pit ready for condo construction and across the road from that another one. I just assumed the fire house would be consumed by the same development. Oh dear I got it soooo wrong, but hey you live and learn. Thanks for the other comments guys, there's clearly much anxiety about the condo bloom in the Brooklyn community. I wonder what Click! 2018 would look like. — Posted by Asshat aka Francesca
