Lisa Pompilio. Lights Go Out on Coney Island, 2007. All rights reserved

Artist Statement

The early years of the twentieth century Coney Island was known as the “People’s Playground”. With the controversy surrounding the new development of Coney Island, my artistic representation of the “Changing Faces of Brooklyn”, is that of a place where the uncertainty of change has dominated the landscape. The lights that once welcomed our great grandparents is for the time being, extinguished. The historic boardwalk and the Parachute Jump in the distance stand in darkness, devoid of the human face as it waits for its final judgement. Taken with a digital camera, before dawn on a rainy day in June.

Very moving shot of a once great piece of New York history...

Just a little too dark...

a great goodbye picture as coney island's boardwalk fades into the past

wow, excellent capture

This is a true embodiment of what I know as Brooklyn.

Could've been technically much better.

so many of these shots...it would be nice to see them all together and then be able to judge fairly

This is absolutely beautiful.

Getting there!

great concept, great image I agree...born in bklyn and i do remember coney island then and now

funny how old amusement parks look better in the darkness of a storm
