El Anatsui (Ghanaian, b. 1944). Amemo (Mask of Humankind) (detail), 2010. Aluminum and copper wire, 208 5/8 x 161 3/8 in. (529.9 x 409.9 cm). Courtesy of the artist and Jack Shainman Gallery, New York. Photograph by Andrew McAllister, courtesy of the Akron Art Museum
This work has no specific orientation and illustrates the artist’s desire for his art to reflect the ever-changing condition of life. Anatsui also wishes to inspire creativity in the people charged with installing his work and says he merely provides “data” for others to reenvision and manipulate.
