Rembrandt was a master at capturing life’s fleeting moments. Here he deftly depicts the transient light that falls on his sitter’s face, hair, and fashionable white lace collar. The painting portrays Rembrandt’s new brother-in-law, Anthonie Coopal, with his eyes locked on the viewer and his mouth slightly open as if in mid-speech. In 1635, Coopal’s political career was just beginning: the future magistrate and secret agent would become one of the most well-connected and powerful men in Rembrandt’s Amsterdam circle. Rembrandt’s status as the city’s leading portraitist, however, was by then firmly secured.
