Artist Statement

I think that it is very important to keep the culture alive through art by using symbols, signs, objects that have been used by the Maroon populations. For example, the Afaka sign has been used to protect the spoons that symbolize the Maroon community while also transforming the object into art.

This work makes me feel happy! Maybe it is the familiar with a flair that catches me. I don't know what the Afake sign is, however.

It is really cool how the artist used items from her personal live to make art. I like the idea of how this work of art represent the culture of many.

I love this work as it says so much about modernization and creolization with its plastic and tin buckets and items alongside the more "folksey" plates and dishes painted with designs and colors sterytypically associated with the Caribbean.

Hallo Marcel, mooi je installatie.Ik zit hier in mijn kantoor en laat het aan een dame zien die hier ook werkt en zij zegt verbaasd"na wan kukru foe tapse!"ik heb haar uitgelgd waar je installatie staat en ze wil nu alles over je weten,ik zal het fotobok met werk van jou voor haar meenemen.Ze het Poeketie Bianca, er gaat een wereld voor haar open en ze is trots op jou!!Ik ook, heel veel succes van een fan in Suriname, tan bun Marisa

Hi Marcel, ik wist niet dat je ook in deze expo zat heb wel Remy al even gezien toen hij er was om op te bouwen en ook Satch :):) laat me weten als je hier bent misschien kunnen we even wat drinken of zo ik ga wel zaterdag naar Nederland en dan ben ik 24 of 25 spetember pas weer terug dus ik mis de opening op de 20e jammer genoeg. Je bent nu toch in Nederland Anne Hermelijn vertelde dat je op de Rijks zit? ik heb hier nu een vriendin wiens zus daar nu ook zit Mirthe Blusse! anywayz ik kom morgen de expo bekijken dus ik ben benieuwd ziet er goed uit zo op het web! misschien tot gauw! It looks real. You would go to a house, especially a house in the countryside, and you will see a rack on the shelf in the kitchen, and you will see coloful plastic plates like that. I can look at that ans say "Yes, this I can understand. This is real. This is true."
