September 12, 1961: The art of award winners will be the second in the series of exhibitions presented by The Brooklyn Museum Art School in cooperation with The Brooklyn Museum. Opening in the Museum’s fifth floor painting galleries on September 21, the Exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints by former members of the School who have received awards and grants from some of the leading foundations of this country and Europe.
Among the twenty award winners whose works will be shown are Mark Samenfeld and William King, Fulbright Scholarship winners, Gerald Mofchum, receiver of a Tiffany grant, and Robert Conover, the McDowell Scholarship award. They are four of the participating artists in the Exhibition who are current instructors in the Art School. Other participants include popular contemporaries now living in various parts of this country and abroad. The sculptor, Dimitri Hadzi, a Guggenheim Fellowship winner living in Rome, has earned an international reputation with exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Venice Biennale and other European showings. Angelo Ippolito, Fulbright Scholarship winner, now teaching at the University of California has exhibited his paintings at the Whitney Museum, the Schaefer Gallery and the Tanager Gallery. New Yorker, Harry Jackson, winner of a grant from the Italian Government, has exhibited paintings and sculpture at the Knoedler and the Martha Jackson Galleries. Merrill Fellowship winner, Richard Olney, who has lived and painted in Paris for the past 9 years, recently held his first New York exhibition at the Isaacson Gallery.
Other prominent award artists in the Exhibition are Fulbright Scholarship painters, Pat Adams, Louis Finkelstein, Jules Kirschenbaum, and Vincent Longo. Represented winners of Whitney Fellowships are painters Walter Williams and Richard Mayhew, who was also awarded a Merrill Fellowship. Sculptor Rhoda Sherbell won a grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and printmakers Michael Ponce deLeon and Gerson Lieber received Tiffany grants and 2 other printmakers, Aubrey Schwartz and Edmond Casarella are winners of Guggenheim Fellowships.
This representative Exhibition will be shown through October 29. On Wednesday, September 20, there will be an invitational opening for alumni, faculty and current members of the Art School. Members of the Museum will be among those to receive the invitations to this special preview.
