February 9, 1965: Eighty-eight major paintings from the Joseph H. Hirshhorn Foundation Collection will be dIsplayed at The Brooklyn Museum from February 9 to April 5. The works, mainly oils and a few watercolors and drawings, are by 47 well-known European and American artists.
The Foundation Collection suggests the wide range of experiment and invention which characterizes 20th century painting. The exhibition illustrates and contrasts various approaches to the problems of realism, expressionism and abstraction.
The realistic tradition of American painting in the first decade of the 20th century is seen in the paintings of Hassam, Eakins, Sloan and Bellows. This tradition is continued later on by Kuhn, Hopper, Soyer and Wyeth, and by two European artists, Balthus and Tchelitchew.
European expressionists represented include Beckmann, Cremonini and Appel. The work of Americans Marin, Weber, Hartley and Rattner also has strong expressive content. Paintings by Shahn and Levine make effective visual comments on the depression and rising Fascism of the Thirties. Romantic sentiment and fantasy are important influences in paintings by Bacon, Prendergast, Eilshemius, Burchfield, Avery, Graves, Kuniyoshl, Evergood and Maclver.
Also exhibited are abstract and semi-abstract works by Feininger, Albers, Davis, I. Rice Pereira, Borduas, Riopelle, Hofmann, Tobey, Gatch and Francis.
Paintings in “A View of the Protean Century” were selected by H. Harvard Arnason of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Thirteen additional works were chosen by The Brooklyn Museum, among them examples by Gorky, Pollock and Kokoschka. An illustrated catalogue, prepared by Mr. Arnason, is available for $1.50.
There will be an admission charge of 50 cents to Paintings From the Hirshhorn Foundation Collection to support the Museum’s Special Exhibition Fund.
