Starrett: City Within A City, an exhibition of approximately 80 black-and-white photographs documenting life in Starrett City, the huge Brooklyn housing complex, will go on view September 7. The photographs, ranging in date, from 1974 to 1985, are drawn mostly from The Starrett Sun, the community’s own weekly newspaper, and will be on view through September 29, 1986.
Starrett City is actually not a city, but a complex of 46 high-rise buildings with 5,881 apartments situated on 153 acres facing Jamaica Bay in the Spring Creek area of Brooklyn between East New York and Canarsie. It is the nation’s largest federally subsidized housing complex with 20,000 people of 30 different nationalities, and reflects in microcosm the full spectrum of Brooklyn’s varied population.
The development is a completely self-contained community with its own schools, churches, medical and recreational facilities, shopping center, restaurants and transportation. It is one of the few residential developments in New York with its own independent power plant, and supplies its tenants with all their electricity, heat, hot water, and air conditioning. In addition, Starrett has its own private security force of 64 armed men and women who patrol with dogs, helping to insure that it has one of the lowest crime rates in the city.
