Art Work Required in the New York City High Schools

  • October 31, 1932 From October 31 to November 27 the Brooklyn Museum will have on exhibition in a fourth floor gallery work done in art appreciation courses in 37 high schools in greater New York. This exhibition has been organized under the auspices of Dr. Forest Grant, Director of Art, Board of Education, to study methods and problems in the teaching of art appreciation throughout the city, and to discover how the syllabus on art appreciation was interpreted. All the work shown was done in the regular class work in art appreciation courses, which are unique in New York City public schools in being required of every pupil.

    During the course of the exhibition there will be 9 conferences hold in the gallery where the work is on display. They are as follows:

    November 7
    Leon Friend

    Mrs. Mabel Brady

    November 10
    Miss Elizabeth Prinzing
    Instructor of Art, Richmond Hill High School
    “Architectural Models as a Help in Art Appreciation”

    November 14
    Miss Bernice Smith
    Instructor of Art, Washington Irving High School
    “Arcusing Interest in Color through a new Approach”

    November 15
    Harry Lewis assisted by Leonard Banach, for the major art classes of DeWitt Clinton High School will demonstrate “Smooch” under the supervision of Mr. George C. K. Gomarts, Head of Art Department, LeWitt Clinton.
