Exhibitions: German Art from the Fifteenth to the Twentieth Century

Date unknown, approximately 1937: On Friday, January 29th, the Brooklyn Museum will open an exhibition of new accessions to various departments. This is the largest showing of new accessions presented at the Museum for some time and necessitates the use of a special exhibition gallery instead of the usual new accessions room. Egyptian, classical, American Indian, primitive, and contemporary material is included. Among prints shown is a drawing by Degas presented to the Museum by the Rembrandt Club.

On Friday, February 5th, the Museum will open with a reception and preview in the evening for members and guests of the Museum an exhibition of Five Centuries of German Art (15th through 19th Century). This is the collection assembled abroad by the Carl Schurtz Foundation, which has published an elaborate catalogue of the collection. It has already been shown at Pennsylvania Museum of Art, Philadelphia the Cleveland Museum of Art; and the Chicago Art institute. After being shown in Brooklyn it will be sent to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh. On account of the limited time available for installation the exhibition in Brooklyn cannot be available for press preview prior to February 5th. Catalogues are now available to the press and will be sent on request.

Date unknown, approximately 1937: On Friday evening, February 5th, the Brooklyn Museum opened with a reception and preview for members and guests the Exhibition of Four Centuries of German Art (paintings and drawings.) The exhibition will be open to the public from February 6th through March 7th. The 16th to 19th Centuries inclusive are represented.

This exhibition was arranged, imported and sponsored by the Oberlaender Trust and The Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation of Philadelphia. It was first shown in the Pennsylvania Museum of Arts, Philadelphia, and has also been shown in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. After leaving Brooklyn, the exhibition will be shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh.

The 248 page illustrated catalogue was published by the Carl Schurz Foundation. Dr. Eberhard Hanfstaengl, Director of the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, served as Chairman of the Exhibition in Germany on appointment by the Ministry of  Culture; Dr. Ernst Buchner, Director of the Altere Pinakothek, and Dr. Friedrich Winkler, Director of the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin acted with Dr. Fanfstaengl as advisers on old master paintings and drawings. Dr. Kurt Biebrach, Counselor for Art in the Ministry of Propaganda, and Dr. von Oppen, Counselor for Art in the Ministry of Culture obtained government permission to obtain loans from state and city museums. Frau Anna Paul, Curator of Drawings in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, assembled the 19th Century drawings.

The exhibition was installed in the Brooklyn Museum by Mr. John I. H. Baur, Curator of Contemporary Art, and Mr. Carl Schniewind, Curator of Prints and Drawings.
