  • March 12, 1944 The Brooklyn Museum announces the extension of the exhibition ONE HUNDRED ARTISTS AND WALKOWITZ through Sunday, March 26. The show was originally scheduled to close on March 12, but it has aroused such widespread interest that it will be on view for two weeks beyond that date.

ONE HUNDRED ARTISTS AND WALKOWITZ is an exhibition of portraits of the American painter Abraham Walkowitz, and includes eighty-nine paintings and eleven pieces of sculpture, as well as a small group of caricatures and photographs. With a few exceptions, all of the portraits exhibited were executed in 1943, and among the hundred artists represented are most of the better-known contemporary American painters and sculptors.

  • February 8, 1944 The Brooklyn Museum is opening today to members and invited guests an exhibition called ONE HUNDRED ARTISTS AND WALKOWITZ, consisting of portraits of the painter Abraham Walkowitz. The show will be opened to the public tomorrow, February 9, and will be on view through March 12.

The one hundred paintings, drawings and sculpture in the exhibition have been chosen from a large group which Mr. Walkowitz has been forming in the last few years. His purpose, as he states in his preface to the catalogue, was to explore the complicated problem of “the relationship between the artist and the object he sees…The experiment: one hundred artists and one subject. Each artist was completely free to choose his medium, his interpretation and form. The results vary with the personality of the artist. If proof were necessary that no two people see an object alike, this is proof indeed. But what is more important - here one discovers that no matter what or whom they paint, artists always reveal themselves.”

The show includes work in a variety of styles, ranging from the academic to the symbolic and abstract. Among the painters represented are Wayman Adams, Alexander Brook, Milton Avery, De Hirsch Margules, Joseph Stella, Moses Soyer, Nahum Tschacbasov, William Gropper and Max Weber. The group of eleven pieces of sculpture includes portraits by Jose De Creeft, Chiam Gross and William Zorach. Also on exhibition are a collection of photographs and caricatures of Mr. Walkowitz, and two early self-—portraits.
