The 28th Annual Exhibition of The Brooklyn Society of Artists will open at the Brooklyn Museum on Tuesday, April 4, from 4 to 6 o’clock, with a private view for Museum members, exhibiting artists and their guests. The exhibition, which is installed in the Special Exhibitions Gallery, will be open to the public on Wednesday, April 5, and will remain current through Sunday, May 7.
In keeping with established precedent, artists residing in or teaching in Brooklyn, were invited to submit works limited to oil, water color, black and white, and sculpture, for selection by a jury. This year the Jury of Selection was composed of Herbert B. Tschudy, William Starkweather, William Zorach, Luigi Lucioni and Hermon More.
All exhibitors were eligible for the prizes offered by The Brooklyn Society of Artists. The Jury of Awards was made up of William Zorach, Luigi Lucioni and Hermon More, and the prizewinners are announced as follows:
$100 War Bond for oil to Adolph Gottlieb for “Symbols and the Desert”
$100 War Bond for sculpture to Cpl. Ben Tatti for “Portrait of My Mother”
$50 War Bond for water color to Jay Roland for “Still Life”
$10 in War Stamps for black and white to Stephen Csoka for “Country Bath”
Honorable Mention
Oil - Alan Blackman for “Winter Over The Town”
Sculpture - Anne Copp for “Seated Woman”
Water Color - Herman Mitnitsky for “Chicken Farm”
Black and White - Ernest Costa for “One Way”
All members of the Brooklyn Society of Artists are entitled to the inclusion of one work in each of two media jury exempt.
