An exhibition of one hundred prints and drawings by Max Beckmann opens in the Print Galleries of the Brooklyn Museum on October 11 with a private opening and reception and will open to the public the following day. The exhibit will remain on view through November 27.
Beckmann’s graphic work dated roughly from 1909 when he completed a series of lithographs. They were followed by woodcuts, etchings and drypoints in a wide range of subjects from portraiture to biting comments on the social and political chaos of Germany during and after the First World War.
Beckmann’s paintings and prints were exhibited by J.B. Neumann in New York in 1931 at the time the artist was being attacked by the Nazis. However, it was not until last year that a large retrospective exhibition of his work was held in this country. Beckmann has lived in the United States since 1947 and is, at present, an instructor at the Brooklyn Museum Art School.
