  • November 28, 1955 Modern tapestries designed by six great painters of the School of Paris--Miro, Leger, Rouault, Derain, Cocteau and Le Corbusier--opened in a special exhibition at The Brooklyn Museum today, Monday, November 28, Fourth Floor Galleries.

The nine tapestries in the exhibition of some 50 tapestries, represent the first attempt to introduce Modern Art to the art of tapestry. Commissioned by Mme. Marie Cuttoli in 1929, collector and friend of the artists, the tapestries were manufactured at Beauvais and Aubusson, famous French weaving works.

"The tapestries commissioned by Mme. Cuttoli,” stated Marvin D. Schwartz, Curator of Decorative Arts who installed the exhibition, “are an important contribution to the history of tapestry. By employing modern painters, Mme. Cuttoli re-established the connections between the tapestry industry and the leading artistic movements. Her efforts inspired others, and brought about a renaissance of French tapestry manufacturing.”
