  • March 20, 1968 In the Fall of 1965, the President of Israel laid the foundation stone of a new university building planned by Oscar Niemeyer, creator of Brasilia, and now being constructed in Haifa in northern Israel. This exciting architectural project will be shown in a special exhibition of Mr. Niemeyer's models and plans at The Brooklyn Museum from March 21 through April 25. Also on display will be ancient objects excavated from the Carmel Heights site before construction began.

The new university is being constructed on a 200 acre site affording panoramic views of the mountains and plains to the rear and the Mediterranean in front. The main building, some 300 yards long by 70 yards wide, will concentrate academic life - lecture halls, auditoria, faculty halls, teachers’ studies, library and student offices - under one roof, in proximity to the administrative and technical services necessary for its maintenance. A second, multi-purpose building consisting of five connected wings has also been started. The campus will be completed in gradual stages over a number of years in keeping with academic needs and the growth of the student population.

Oscar Niemeyer, one of Latin America’s most prominent architects, was an associate of the late Le Corbusier. He was one of the master planners of Brasilia.

The exhibition at The Brooklyn Museum is under the honorary sponsorship of Mr. Michael Arnon, Consul General for Israel, Mayor John V. Lindsay, Senator Jacob K. Javits, and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
